Bangkok With its ambitious goal to provide True Relief for all People with Diabetes (PwD) in Thailand, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day 2020, Roche Diabetes Care Thailand partnered up with multiple stakeholders to conduct educational and awareness activities aimed at supporting PwD to increase their awareness of monitoring & managing their disease. According to IDF Diabetes Atlas Ninth edition 2019, it is unveiled that there are 4.2 million of people with diabetes in Thailand and its prevalence reached up to 8.3%1

World Diabetes Day was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes and it is marked every year on 14 November. It is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign and it draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.

In Thailand, the data shows that 8.3 million people already have Pre-Diabetes and this number is expected to increase significantly up to 11.4 million within 20301, according to the information from IDF Diabetes Atlas Ninth edition 2019. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2020 is ‘The Nurse and Diabetes’. The campaign aims to raise awareness around the crucial role that nurses play in supporting people living with diabetes in any circumstances.

While Type 1 Diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease, the increasing prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is triggered by multiple changes in lifestyle such as increasingly high-sugar and high-fat diets, urbanization, lack of physical exercise, sedentary work, stress and lack of sleep. It is crucial for PwD to monitor their blood glucose levels before and after meals as well as to pay attention to their nutrition and exercise as they directly influence their blood sugar levels over time.

This year, Roche Diabetes Care Thailand collaborated with multiple stakeholders to roll out several activities: provided a virtual training to pharmacists around Diabetes Self-Management Care, organized a roadshow event to create awareness on diabetes management, set up multiple free of charge screening points for diabetes risk assessment by using blood glucose monitoring World Diabetes Day week. All of these actions aim to drive awareness and to encourage Thai people to prevent and to protect themselves from Diabetes and for PwD, in particular to closely monitor their blood sugar level and to keep the diabetes in control, which will help prevent or mitigate Diabetes-related complications on eyes, kidney, heart and limbs[1]
